Artist Statement
It all starts with my obsession with lines, the width, length, and flow as I sit at my desk with a red pencil and paper and start to randomly sketch. The round oblong shapes start transforming as I add sharp edged lines creating a recognizable image…a face. My vision begins to flood with subconscious images of things I’ve seen or experienced and the imagery starts to take form on this 2D surface. Being involved in several low brow subcultures the drawing are full of high contrast and quick visual stimulation.
As I start a final painting I choose a sketch and enlarge it on a surface. Choosing bright colors that reference flash tattoo and graffiti art allow the imagery to be seen as profound against what surrounds it, much like using a loud voice to be heard. The contorting lines start to become overstimulating and seemingly out of control until the piece is thickly outlined to contain the chaos within. These start to become the physical representation of my hidden ideas on communication.
The completed paintings are a mirror image of the emotional self, giving me room to organize the chaos of everyday life. Concluding that we are responsible for taking control of our own personal experiences in this dimension.
